Frequently Asked Questions
At Ruff Life, we use a balanced training approach that prioritizes positive reinforcement. We focus on what motivates each individual dog, whether that is food, toys, or attention, to build clear communication and lasting results. When needed, we also incorporate fair and appropriate corrections, especially in situations where safety is a concern or when reinforcement alone has not been effective.
Every training plan is tailored to the dog in front of us, taking into account their behavior, learning style, and unique motivators, and we always approach training with compassion while prioritizing the well-being of every dog in our care.
At Ruff Life, we offer group obedience classes on a wide range of beginner and advanced topics, private one-on-one sessions either at our facility or your home, half-day or full-day drop-off training, and board & train for two weeks or more. You can choose the structure that's right for your dog, and we can provide guidance based on your goals.
This depends on your obedience goals and your dog's specific behavioral challenges. It's also a matter of how involved you'd like to be in your dog's training. Many clients enjoy the bonding time and learning opportunity they get with their dog in group classes or private sessions, while others appreciate the convenience of dropping their dog off with us, either on specific days or longer term for two weeks or more. We're happy to discuss your situation and help you develop the ideal learning approach for your family.
We can work with you and your dog to address a wide range of behavioral challenges, including reactivity, aggression, anxiety, and more. Every dog is different, so we take the time to understand what is driving their behavior and create a clear, effective training plan that supports both the dog and the owner.
Our approach is patient, practical, and focused on improving your dog’s quality of life as well as your relationship with them, because we believe every dog is capable of learning, making progress, and becoming a well-behaved companion.
Yes! Your dog can come to us as a beginner in any training format (group classes, private sessions, drop-off training, or board & train), and then continue with additional classes or sessions as they progress. We love having members of our pack stick with us long term to take on new challenges and learn advanced obedience skills.
We serve all of Asheville and surrounding areas! We are happy to provide mobile appointments from Waynesville to Marion, Mars Hill to Hendersonville, and everywhere in between.
Group classes are held at our newly constructed facility at 803 Fairview St. in Asheville, but some more advanced classes will have field trips to public areas for practice. When you drop your dog off with us, we'll also often (safely) take them outside to work on specific skills like heeling and engaging around distractions.
We house the dogs in the home of their trainer! They do NOT stay overnight in the facility without a human presence. They sleep in a cozy and caring environment, and we treat them as we do our own dogs.
At Ruff Life, we genuinely care about helping you and your dog live your happiest, most harmonious lives together. We are experts at identifying and employing the techniques that will make an impact on your dog's behavior, and we treat each family as individual clients that require personal attention and a tailored approach, even in group classes.
Our methods have been proven over many years of experience. We take pride in fostering a warm and caring environment where your dog can thrive, and we give you the knowledge and tools you need to continue progress at home and out in the real world. When you're a member of the Ruff Life pack, your dog's success and well-being are our top priority.
